Google reiterate position on generic top-level domains (gTLD)

In May 2015 the number of generic top-level domains (gTLD) reached over 600 domains (and there are over 2000 still on the waiting list). Examples of some of the original gTLD are .com, .org, .net, .edu & .gov. However now there are hundreds of gTLD such as .pizza, .marketing, .flowers, there are questions about how Google handles these.

Google has answered some of the common questions regarding the handling of the new gTLD, stating that "keywords in a TLD do not give any advantage or disadvantage in search.

Should TLD discussions be part of your digital marketing strategy?

We know adding keywords to your TLD, won't affect your SEO efforts, however there is the possibility that it will help your click-through-rates (CTR), so it's always worth having the discussion.

Also, we definitely know that country TLD i.e. .uk or .de are used in geo-targeting, resulting in improved rankings in the specific country.

If you are thinking about changing your TLD then you need to think about your long term strategy and how you can migrate your past SEO efforts to your new domain name. If you have any queries or would like to discuss, feel free to drop us a line or pop in for a chat!
